Good to know

How is the due date calculated?

We add 280 days (40 weeks) to the first day of your last period. This is the method most health professionals use, known as Naegele's rule. It assumes a cycle of about 28 days with ovulation around day 14.

Why 40 weeks?

A pregnancy lasts on average 40 weeks from the last period, or about 38 weeks after conception. A birth between 37 and 42 weeks is considered full term.

Can the due date change?

Yes. A first-trimester dating ultrasound is generally more accurate than a calculation based on your period, especially if your cycles are irregular. Your health professional may adjust the date.

The trimesters of pregnancy

The 1st trimester runs to about 13 weeks, the 2nd from 14 to 27 weeks and the 3rd from 28 weeks until birth.
