Swaddling: what are the benefits and the safety rules?

Done right, swaddling can soothe a newborn and help them sleep better. Done wrong, it carries real risks. Here's how to do it safely.

Swaddling means wrapping baby in a light, breathable blanket to recreate the snug feeling they knew in the womb. Done well, it can reduce Moro reflex startles, extend sleep stretches, and soothe some babies during periods of intense crying.

The most important safety rule is leaving baby's hips and legs free to move in a natural frog-like position — swaddling too tightly around the hips is linked to a higher risk of hip dysplasia. The arms, on the other hand, can be kept close to the body, especially in the first few weeks.

A swaddled baby should always be placed on their back, never on their stomach or side, and the fabric should never cover the face or make baby uncomfortably warm — overheating is a known risk factor for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Overly thick blankets should also be avoided in warm weather.

Swaddling should be stopped as soon as baby shows signs of rolling over, typically between 2 and 4 months: at that point, a swaddled baby who rolls onto their stomach can no longer use their arms to reposition themselves, which significantly raises the risk of suffocation. The switch is then to a sleep sack that leaves arms free.
