When do you feel your baby's first kicks?
That first 'flutter' usually shows up between 16 and 25 weeks — here's what affects when you'll notice it.
Baby's first movements — often described as a light 'flutter' or bubbles in the belly — are typically felt between weeks 18 and 20 of pregnancy. Some people notice them as early as week 16, others not until 22 to 25 weeks.
Several things affect the timing: during a first pregnancy, these subtle sensations are often harder to recognize at first, while in a later pregnancy you already know what to expect and tend to notice them sooner. Placenta position and the amount of abdominal tissue can also play a role.

Around 24 to 28 weeks, movements usually become clearer and more frequent — real little kicks rather than flutters. Many healthcare providers suggest this is a good time to start paying attention to your baby's movement patterns.
If you notice a marked decrease or absence of movement after the point where you'd normally feel your baby regularly, contact your healthcare provider right away — that's always the right thing to do, even if it likely turns out to be nothing.
