Birth photography: what to expect
Capturing your baby's first minutes of life: how it actually works and how to plan for it.
A birth photographer comes to the location (hospital, birth center, or home) once labor is far enough along, to document all or part of the birth in photos — from the final contractions through the first moments after birth, depending on the family's preferences.
Unlike a typical photo session, this is documentary-style work: the photographer stays unobtrusive, generally uses little or no flash, and captures moments as they unfold rather than staging them.

It's important to check ahead of time with your place of birth whether a photographer is allowed, since policies vary. Most photographers also ask to be called at the first signs of labor so they have time to get there.
Talk clearly with your photographer beforehand about your boundaries: which moments you do or don't want captured (for example, the birth itself versus just the moments after), and how the most intimate photos will later be shared or kept.
