What is a birth plan and how do you prepare one?
A simple document to clarify your wishes for the big day, while staying flexible about the unexpected.
A birth plan is a short document, usually a single page, that summarizes your preferences for labor and delivery: who you want by your side, your preferred position for pushing, your approach to pain management, and your wishes around skin-to-skin contact or cord clamping.
It isn't a rigid contract, but a communication tool that helps your care team quickly get to know your preferences, especially if you're seen by multiple providers or if birth happens outside regular hours.

It also helps to include your wishes for less-expected scenarios — for example, a cesarean birth or a transfer to more specialized care — rather than sticking only to the ideal scenario. That way you're not improvising major decisions in the middle of labor.
What matters most is flexibility: birth doesn't always go as planned, and that's neither a failure nor a sign of poor planning. Talking it through ahead of time with your healthcare provider and your partner helps you approach the day with more peace of mind, whichever way things go.
