Can you fly during pregnancy?

For most uncomplicated pregnancies, flying remains safe — here are the precautions and the best windows for travel.

For an uncomplicated pregnancy, most airlines and healthcare providers consider flying safe up to around 36 weeks for domestic flights, and often a bit earlier for international ones. The second trimester (weeks 14 to 27) is generally considered the most comfortable window for travel.

Most airlines don't require any documentation before 28 weeks, but often ask for a letter from your healthcare provider confirming your due date and the absence of complications past that point. It's always worth checking your specific carrier's policy before booking.

The main risk tied to long flights is blood clot formation (venous thrombosis), a risk that's already slightly elevated during pregnancy. Getting up and walking every hour, wearing compression stockings, and staying well hydrated all help reduce that risk.

Some situations call for more caution — multiple pregnancy, a history of preeclampsia, risk of preterm birth, or complications such as placenta previa — and are worth discussing with your healthcare provider before planning travel, especially later in pregnancy.

This information is general and does not replace advice from your healthcare professional (doctor, midwife, nurse, pharmacist). Every situation is unique: always check with them before making a decision. In an emergency, call 911 or your local emergency services.
