Caring for the umbilical cord stump at home

The cord stump needs little care, but a few good habits help avoid irritation or infection until it falls off.

After birth, the umbilical cord is clamped and cut, leaving a small stump that gradually dries out and usually falls off on its own within 1 to 3 weeks. Current recommendations favor 'dry cord care': keeping the area clean and exposed to air, without applying alcohol, powder, or other products, unlike older practices.

The stump should stay exposed to air as much as possible; the diaper is usually folded down to keep it from rubbing against the stump or covering it in urine. If it does get wet with urine or stool, a simple rinse with warm water followed by gentle drying is enough.

It's normal for the stump to change color (from yellowish to brown or black) as it dries, and for a small amount of clear or slightly blood-tinged fluid to appear just before it falls off. Full immersion baths are generally avoided until the cord has fully come off, in favor of sponge baths.

Seek care promptly if you notice spreading redness around the base, pus, a foul smell, or fever in the baby — these signs could point to an infection (omphalitis) that needs medical treatment.
