Cesarean birth: what to know before and after

About 1 in 4 births in North America happen by cesarean. Here's how the procedure works and what recovery looks like.

A cesarean birth can be planned in advance (for example with breech presentation, placenta previa, or, depending on the situation, a prior cesarean) or decided during labor if it isn't progressing, if the baby shows signs of distress, or for other medical reasons.

The procedure itself usually takes 30 to 60 minutes and is most often done under an epidural or spinal block, which allows the mother to stay awake and, in many cases, have skin-to-skin contact with the baby very soon after birth.

Recovery after a cesarean generally takes longer than after a vaginal birth: it's often recommended to avoid lifting anything heavier than the baby for several weeks, and the incision needs careful attention to heal well.

Emotionally, it's common to feel a mix of emotions about a cesarean, especially an unplanned one. Those feelings are valid and deserve to be acknowledged — talking about it with your care team or a perinatal mental health professional can help.

This information is general and does not replace advice from your healthcare professional (doctor, midwife, nurse, pharmacist). Every situation is unique: always check with them before making a decision. In an emergency, call 911 or your local emergency services.
