Cord blood banking: how does it work?

Public or private: what cord blood contains, what it can be used for, and the questions to ask before deciding.

The blood left in the umbilical cord and placenta after birth is rich in hematopoietic stem cells, which can develop into different types of blood cells. This blood can be collected painlessly and without risk to mother or baby, right after the cord is clamped.

There are two types of banks: public banks, where donation is free and the blood becomes available to any compatible person in need (notably for treating certain leukemias and other blood disorders), and private, fee-based banks, where the blood is stored exclusively for potential family use.

Pediatric societies note that the odds a child will ever need their own stem cells are quite low, and generally recommend public donation as the preferable option when possible, unless there's a specific family history that justifies private storage.

Collection needs to be arranged ahead of time with your place of birth, since not every maternity ward offers this service, and some public banks have eligibility criteria. Talk to your healthcare provider well before your due date if you're interested in this option.
