Do you have to let your baby 'cry it out' to help them sleep?

Between full extinction and constant presence, there's a whole spectrum of sleep training methods. Here's how to make sense of them.

The term 'sleep training' actually covers several very different approaches, from full extinction (letting baby cry without intervening) to much more gradual methods where the parent stays present but slowly steps back, all the way to approaches that involve no crying at all.

Available research, while limited, suggests that well-applied gradual methods don't appear to cause long-term harm to a child's attachment or emotional development, though studies still lack long-term follow-up on several specific approaches.

There's no universally 'best' method: the right choice depends on your child's temperament, your own emotional tolerance, and what's realistic for your family situation. No single method fits every family, and it's entirely valid not to choose one at all.

Most sources agree it's best to wait until at least 4 to 6 months before trying a more structured training method, giving baby's sleep cycles and nutritional needs some time to settle. Discussing your options with your healthcare provider can help you pick an approach that fits.

This information is general and does not replace advice from your healthcare professional (doctor, midwife, nurse, pharmacist). Every situation is unique: always check with them before making a decision. In an emergency, call 911 or your local emergency services.
