Healing after a cesarean: care and timeline

A cesarean scar needs particular attention in the first weeks — here's how to take good care of it.

A cesarean incision goes through several layers of tissue (skin, muscle, uterus), and healing happens in stages: the skin usually closes within 1 to 2 weeks, while deeper tissues keep strengthening for several months, up to about 6 months for the internal healing to fully complete.

In the first few days, it's normal for the area to be tender, slightly swollen, and reddened around the incision. It's recommended to keep the wound clean and dry, watch for signs of infection (spreading redness, warmth, discharge, fever), and avoid clothing that rubs directly against the scar.

Avoiding lifting anything heavier than the baby, repeated stair climbing, and resuming intense exercise before your healthcare provider's okay — usually around 6 weeks — helps protect the scar while it's still solidifying.

A pulling sensation, tingling, or even numbness around the scar can persist for several months — that's generally normal and improves over time. Worsening pain, a wound that separates, or fever, on the other hand, call for prompt medical evaluation.

This information is general and does not replace advice from your healthcare professional (doctor, midwife, nurse, pharmacist). Every situation is unique: always check with them before making a decision. In an emergency, call 911 or your local emergency services.
