How to make a smooth transition from crib to big-kid bed?
Not too early, not too late: the right time depends mostly on safety and development, not a fixed age.
There's no fixed recommended age for this move: most children make the switch between 2 and 3.5 years old, but the most reliable signal is behavioral rather than chronological โ a child who starts climbing over the crib rail should move to a safe bed as soon as possible, to avoid falls during an escape attempt.
Outside of that safety situation, it's often best to wait as long as reasonably possible before making the transition, especially if a new baby is arriving soon โ freeing up the crib too early for the older child, right when the younger one needs it, can create a sense of displacement for the older sibling.

To ease the transition, you can involve the child in picking out new sheets, install a guard rail on the open side of the bed, keep the bed in the same spot in the room if possible, and maintain the usual bedtime routine to limit how many things change at once.
A few weeks of adjustment, with more frequent wake-ups or repeated visits to the parents' room, is normal. Staying consistent about limits (the child stays in their room, even though they can now get up) while still offering comfort helps the new routine settle in.
