How to manage jet lag with a child?

Children often adjust to jet lag more slowly than adults. A few adjustments before, during, and after travel make a real difference.

Jet lag happens when the internal (circadian) clock stays set to departure time while the outside environment now follows a new schedule. As a rule of thumb, it takes about a day to adjust per hour of time difference, and children can sometimes be more sensitive to it than adults, partly because their rhythm is already less flexible.

Before leaving, for a big time difference, you can start gradually shifting bedtime and mealtimes by 15 to 30 minutes a day in the days leading up to the trip, to bring the internal clock closer to the destination's schedule.

Once there, exposure to natural daylight at the destination is the most powerful tool for resetting the internal clock: getting outside in the morning if the clock needs to move forward, or in the late afternoon if it needs to move back. Keeping meals and naps at times that fit the new time zone, even if it's hard the first few days, speeds up the adjustment.

Patience and flexibility remain essential: it's normal for sleep to be disrupted for several days, with very early wake-ups or afternoon drowsiness. Avoiding overstimulating a tired child and allowing longer naps than usual when needed helps get through this period without too much exhaustion.
