How to manage sleep and nighttime breastfeeding?

Night feeds are normal and necessary for many months. Here's how to make them easier to live with for the whole family.

Breast milk digests quickly and a newborn's stomach is tiny, which is why frequent night feeds (sometimes every 2 to 3 hours) are normal and essential in the early months — they don't mean something is wrong, and they also play an important role in maintaining milk supply, since prolactin is released more at night.

To limit full wake-ups, it helps to keep the nighttime environment dark and calm: a warm-light night-light rather than an overhead light, minimal talking, and avoiding stimulating baby with play or an unnecessary diaper change. Baby's body will gradually learn to associate nighttime with quiet and sleep.

Nursing in a semi-reclined or lying position can help parents get a bit of rest during a feed, but it's important to stay awake while baby nurses unless you've set up a safe co-sleeping space beforehand — falling asleep with baby on a sofa, an armchair, or a bed not prepared for bed-sharing increases the risk of suffocation.

The frequency of night feeds decreases gradually with age, but the pace varies enormously from baby to baby. Some breastfed babies keep waking at night well past 6 months, which is physiologically normal and doesn't necessarily reflect real hunger — it isn't a problem that needs to be 'fixed' at all costs.
