Induced labor: reasons and what to expect

About 1 in 4 births in North America is induced. Here's why, and what the induction process actually looks like.

Induced labor means artificially starting labor before it begins on its own. Common reasons include a pregnancy going past 41-42 weeks, high blood pressure or preeclampsia, poorly controlled gestational diabetes, water breaking without contractions, or the baby's growth slowing down.

Induction can be done several ways, often combined: medications (prostaglandins or oxytocin) to start contractions and ripen the cervix, or mechanical methods like a balloon catheter inserted into the cervix to encourage dilation. The choice depends on how ready the cervix is at the time of assessment.

The process can take several hours, sometimes more than a full day, especially if the cervix isn't ready to begin with. Continuous monitoring of the baby's heart rate and contractions is usually done throughout the induction.

An induced labor carries a slightly higher chance of needing other interventions, such as an earlier epidural or, in some cases, a cesarean — but when medically indicated, the benefits generally outweigh these risks. Your healthcare provider will discuss the specific reasons and available options with you.
