Snoring in children: is it a cause for concern?

Occasional snoring during a cold is harmless. Loud, regular snoring can point to sleep apnea, which deserves an evaluation.

Occasional snoring, especially during a cold, nasal congestion, or seasonal allergies, is common and generally harmless in children. Air passing through partially blocked nasal passages is enough to cause the sound, which usually goes away once the congestion clears.

On the other hand, snoring that's regular (more than 3 nights a week), particularly loud, or accompanied by breathing pauses, daytime mouth-breathing, heavy night sweats, or labored breathing can be a sign of obstructive sleep apnea, often linked in young children to enlarged tonsils or adenoids.

Untreated sleep apnea in children can affect growth, behavior (irritability, attention difficulties sometimes mistaken for ADHD), and school performance, because sleep — even if it seems long enough — isn't truly restorative.

If snoring is frequent and comes with any of these signs, a visit to a healthcare provider, possibly including a sleep study, is recommended. Treatment, when needed, may include managing allergies or, in some cases, tonsil and adenoid surgery, which often improves sleep considerably.
