What are the different positions for giving birth?

Lying down, on all fours, squatting, or in water: the position you give birth in can affect comfort and how labor progresses.

Contrary to the classic image of lying flat on your back, many positions are possible during labor and pushing: on all fours, squatting, semi-sitting, standing while leaning on a partner, or even in water if a labor tub is available.

Upright or hands-and-knees positions use gravity to help the baby descend and can slightly widen the pelvis, which is sometimes associated with a somewhat shorter pushing stage and less need for episiotomy in some women.

The choice also depends on the type of pain relief used: with a well-dosed epidural, mobility is often more limited, while without pain medication, or with non-pharmacological pain management, there's generally more freedom to change position based on what feels best.

There's no universally 'best' position — your care team may offer different options depending on how labor is progressing, the baby's position, and your own comfort. Trying a few positions during labor, rather than committing to just one in advance, is often the most practical approach.
