When and how to start introducing solid foods?

Most health organizations recommend starting around 6 months. Here are the readiness signs to watch for and how to begin with confidence.

The World Health Organization and most pediatric societies recommend introducing solid foods around 6 months of age, alongside breast milk or formula, which continues to meet most nutritional needs up to age 1.

Rather than relying on age alone, it also helps to watch for readiness signs: baby can hold their head up steadily, can sit with a little support, shows interest in others' food, and has lost the tongue-thrust reflex that automatically pushes objects out of the mouth.

Most families start with smooth, single-texture purées (vegetables, fruit, iron-fortified cereal) or with baby-led weaning, depending on family preference — both approaches are considered valid when done safely.

Since iron is especially important at this age, many guidelines emphasize introducing iron-rich foods (meats, legumes, fortified cereals) early in the process. Common allergens (egg, peanut, dairy, fish) can generally be introduced one at a time from 6 months onward, without delay — unless your healthcare provider advises otherwise for a child at high allergy risk.

This information is general and does not replace advice from your healthcare professional (doctor, midwife, nurse, pharmacist). Every situation is unique: always check with them before making a decision. In an emergency, call 911 or your local emergency services.
