How to introduce common allergens without fear?

The approach has changed: early introduction, not delay, is now the recommendation. Here's how to do it safely.

For a long time, delaying the introduction of common allergens (egg, peanut, tree nuts, fish, dairy, sesame) was recommended as a way to 'prevent' allergies. More recent evidence shows the opposite: introducing them early, from around 6 months, actually seems to lower the risk of developing a food allergy.

The idea is to introduce each allergen one at a time, in a small amount, at home rather than at a restaurant or daycare, and to watch baby closely for a few hours afterward before offering it again. Keeping that food as part of the regular diet afterward also seems to play a protective role.

A true allergic reaction usually shows up as hives, facial swelling, repeated vomiting, or, less often but more seriously, breathing difficulty — different from simple skin irritation around the mouth, which is very common and unrelated to an allergy.

For a child at higher allergy risk (severe eczema, an already-known food allergy, or a severe allergy in an immediate family member), it's recommended to talk with your healthcare provider before introducing allergens, as they may suggest doing so under supervision or with extra precautions.

This information is general and does not replace advice from your healthcare professional (doctor, midwife, nurse, pharmacist). Every situation is unique: always check with them before making a decision. In an emergency, call 911 or your local emergency services.
