Sciatica and pelvic pain during pregnancy
Pressure on the sciatic nerve or pelvic instability can cause significant pain — here's how to recognize it and find relief.
Sciatic pain during pregnancy occurs when the baby's weight, the position of the uterus, or muscle tension compress the sciatic nerve, causing pain that often starts in the lower back or buttock and travels down one leg, sometimes all the way to the foot.
Pelvic pain, called pelvic girdle pain or symphysis pubis dysfunction when it affects the pubic joint, comes instead from hormonal loosening of the pelvic ligaments, caused by relaxin, combined with the growing weight that throws off the pelvis's normal alignment.

Certain habits help with both types of pain: avoiding staying in the same position too long, sleeping with a pillow between the knees, avoiding asymmetrical movements like climbing stairs one leg at a time without support, and keeping the knees together when turning over in bed or getting out of a car.
Prenatal physiotherapy, often with targeted exercises for the pelvic floor and pelvis-stabilizing muscles, frequently brings significant relief. If the pain is severe, prevents walking, or comes with weakness in one leg, see your healthcare provider for a closer evaluation.
